Unleash the Full Image: Importing Full-Measurement Images to Instagram with Make.com

Instagram’s square format can be frustrating when you have a stunning tall photo you want to share. But fear not, there’s a clever workaround using Make.com (formerly Integromat) and Instagram for Business. Here’s how to create stunning carousel posts that showcase your full-size photo in all its glory:

What you’ll need:

  • A Make.com account (Free plan available)
  • An Instagram Business Profile (Connect it to Facebook)
  • A tall photo you want to upload

Steps:

  1. Connect Instagram to Make.com:
    • In Make.com, head to the “Apps” section and search for “Instagram for Business.”
    • Click on it and follow the on-screen instructions to connect your Instagram Business Profile to Make.com.
  2. Create a New Scenario:
    • Click on “Scenarios” and then “New Scenario.”
    • Give your scenario a descriptive name like “Upload Full Photo to Instagram.”
  3. Build the Workflow:
    • Trigger: Select “Manual” as the trigger. This means you’ll run the scenario when you want to upload a new photo.
    • Action 1: Add Item to Instagram Carousel:
      • Choose “Instagram for Business” as the app.
      • Select “Add item to carousel post.”
      • Connect your Instagram Business Profile if not already done.
      • Under “Caption,” you can add a caption for your post.
    • Action 2 (Repeat Action 1):
      • Click the “+” button to add another action.
      • Repeat Step 3a, but leave the caption field blank. This creates a second empty “slide” in your carousel.
  4. Adding Your Photos:
    • In the “Image URL 1” field of the first “Add item to carousel post” action (Action 1), you’ll paste the magic ingredient.
    • Open another tab and head to Imgur.com (desktop version recommended).
    • Upload your full-size photo to Imgur.
    • Once uploaded, right-click on the image and choose “Copy image address.”
    • Here’s the trick: Paste the copied Imgur URL into the “Image URL 1” field in Make.com. However, Instagram requires carousels to have a specific aspect ratio.
      • To fix this, simply add “.png” to the end of the Imgur URL. This tells Make.com to treat the image as a PNG format, which allows for custom aspect ratios.
  5. Run the Scenario:
    • Once you’ve pasted the modified Imgur URL with “.png” extension and filled in any desired caption, click “OK” to finalize the scenario.
    • Now, click the “Run once” button.

The magic happens:

Make.com will create a carousel post on your Instagram Business Profile with two "slides." The first slide will be a blank image (from the second action), allowing your full-size photo uploaded through Imgur to display in its entirety on the second slide.

Tips:

  • You can experiment with the number of "empty" slides you add to adjust the placement of your full-size photo within the carousel.
  • Remember, Instagram has a maximum image size for carousels. Make sure your Imgur upload doesn't exceed that limit.

By following these steps, you can ditch the cropping and share your full-size photos on Instagram like a pro!
